Homework Help Forum: 9th Algebra

Im in 9th grade algebra. and we are learning adding and subtracting real numbers. im stumped on a couple of problems. I get confused when i see the absolute value lines. Does that change the munber? Do i just go on with the problem as if they werent there? And i have NO idea how to do 2/5 - 7/8?!?

  2/5 - 7/8 = 2*8/5*8 - 7*5/8*5 = 16/40 - 35/40 = -19/40
