I know i am not suppose to ask this kind of question but I thought the teachers here can help me. The question is :

Retaking the regent: Good or bad thing?
I live under the NYCDOE. I am retaking a regent back. However, the question is that if i take regent back, would only the highest score will show up on my transcript or no? If the both score shows up, how does that will affect me for college. I mean like are the colleges going to hold it against me if I retake it. If you can help me with that, that's would be helpful and appreciated. Please replay as soon as possible.

It will be really appreciated for answering the question.

Please be patient. We are all volunteers who answer questions when we have spare time. I think someone who is an expert on college admissions and retaking tests will answer you within the next several hours.

I apologize for being impatient

I understand your concern about retaking a regent exam and how it might affect your college applications. Let me explain the process to help you make an informed decision:

1. How regents scores are reported: In the NYCDOE, both the original and retaken regent scores will appear on your transcript. However, the higher score will typically be used for calculation purposes.

2. College admissions perspective: Most colleges focus on your highest scores rather than penalizing you for retakes. They understand that students may need additional attempts to improve their understanding of the subject matter. Colleges often consider the best score or a combination of your highest section scores across multiple attempts.

3. Institutions with different policies: While many colleges accept the highest score, it is always a good idea to research the specific policies of the institutions you are interested in. Some colleges may have limitations on the number of times you can retake an exam or may indicate a preference for the first score.

4. Demonstrating improvement: Retaking a regent exam and achieving a higher score can demonstrate your dedication, perseverance, and ability to overcome challenges. This can have a positive impact on your college application, especially if your improved score aligns with your desired major or field of study.

My recommendation is to consider retaking the regent if you believe you can improve upon your previous score significantly. It's also essential to focus on other aspects of your college application, such as your GPA, extracurricular activities, personal statement, and letters of recommendation to present a well-rounded profile.

Remember, this information serves as general guidance, and it's always a good idea to consult with your school counselor or college admissions office for specific advice tailored to your situation.
