Which statement about structure and bonding is INCORRECT?

a. ) The bond length is the internuclear distance.
b. ) The covalent bond is a region of high electron charge density between two atoms.
c. ) Hybrid orbitals are combination of atomic orbitals.
d. ) There are the same number of hybrid orbitals produced as the number of atomic orbitals combined.
e. ) An sp hybridization produces a tetrahedral centre in a molecule.

I think the answer is either a or b. I can't decide which one is incorrect. I do believe that the others are wrong unless someone can correct me.

Please and Thanks!!

Dunno why questions didn't post.

I thinks either a or e. Not 100% sure. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks!!

The reason you are having trouble posting is that you (probably) are trying to copy and paste. This forum does not allow that. You will need to type in your complete question.

To determine which statement about structure and bonding is incorrect, let's analyze each statement one by one:

a) The bond length is the internuclear distance.
This statement is correct. Bond length refers to the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms, so it is the internuclear distance.

b) The covalent bond is a region of high electron charge density between two atoms.
This statement is also correct. In a covalent bond, two atoms share electron pairs, resulting in a higher electron charge density between them.

c) Hybrid orbitals are a combination of atomic orbitals.
This statement is correct. Hybrid orbitals are formed by combining different types of atomic orbitals through hybridization. This combination allows the formation of new orbitals with specific spatial characteristics.

d) There are the same number of hybrid orbitals produced as the number of atomic orbitals combined.
This statement is incorrect. When hybridization occurs, the number of hybrid orbitals produced is equal to the number of atomic orbitals combined. For example, sp hybridization involves combining one s orbital and one p orbital to form two sp hybrid orbitals.

e) An sp hybridization produces a tetrahedral center in a molecule.
This statement is also incorrect. An sp hybridization produces linear geometry, not tetrahedral. Tetrahedral geometry is typically associated with sp3 hybridization.

Based on the explanations above, the incorrect statement is option e.
