Use lattice multiplication to find each product

124 X 56

I hope your teacher also teaches you multiplication in the traditional way.

By the time you have set up your lattice, I will have obtained the answer multiplying in the established method.

If you really have to know how to do this by the silly way, here is a youtube video

To solve this multiplication problem using lattice multiplication, follow these steps:

Step 1: Set up the lattice grid by drawing a rectangle and dividing it into four cells. Label the top row with the digits of the first number (124) and the left column with the digits of the second number (56).

| 1 | 2 | 4 |
-------------------
5 | | | |
-------------------
6 | | | |

Step 2: Multiply each digit in the top row with each digit in the left column and write the result in the corresponding cell. Start with the rightmost digit (4) of the first number and the rightmost digit (6) of the second number.

| 1 | 2 | 4 |
-------------------
5 | | | 20 |
-------------------
6 | | | |

Multiply 4 with 6: 4 x 6 = 24. Write the result (24) in the bottom-right cell.

Step 3: Continue multiplying the remaining digits. Multiply 2 from the top row with 6 from the left column:

| 1 | 2 | 4 |
-------------------
5 | | 12 | 20 |
-------------------
6 | | | |

Multiply 2 with 6: 2 x 6 = 12. Write the result (12) in the bottom-left cell.

Next, multiply 1 from the top row with 6 from the left column:

| 1 | 2 | 4 |
-------------------
5 | | 12 | 20 |
-------------------
6 | 6 | | |

Multiply 1 with 6: 1 x 6 = 6. Write the result (6) in the top-left cell.

Step 4: Add the numbers diagonally from the top-right to the bottom-left of each cell. Start from the top-right cell and move diagonally down-left to the bottom-left cell.

| 1 | 2 | 4 |
-------------------
5 | | 12 | 20 |
-------------------
6 | 6 | 12 | |

Add 2 and 12: 2 + 12 = 14. Write the result (14) in the top-right cell.

Continue adding diagonally:

| 1 | 2 | 4 |
-------------------
5 | 2 | 12 | 20 |
-------------------
6 | 6 | 12 | |

Add 6 and 12: 6 + 12 = 18.

| 1 | 2 | 4 |
-------------------
5 | 2 | 12 | 20 |
-------------------
6 | 6 | 12 | 18 |

Step 5: Multiply the numbers in each cell by the corresponding place value.

Starting from the bottom-right cell and moving up-left, multiply the number in each cell by the corresponding place value and sum them up.

Bottom-right cell: 20 (2 in tens place)
Bottom-left cell: 12 (2 in ones place)
Top-right cell: 180 (1 in tens place)
Top-left cell: 600 (1 in ones place)

Step 6: Add up the results from each cell to get the final product.

20 + 12 + 180 + 600 = 812

Therefore, 124 X 56 = 812.
