1. I am glad because my dog gives birth to four puppies.

2. I am glad because my dog gave birth to four puppies.

3. I was glad because my bog gave birth to four babies.

4. I was glad because my dog had given birth to four babies.

(Which expressions are correct and commonly used? Thank you for your help.)

the 2nd one does, but u wouldn't have to use because

#1 is not correct English.

The other three are correct and commonly used.

Typically newborn dogs are not called babies, so #2 is the best version. Babies are usually assumed to be human.
