add:

-3+5

7+(-11)

-3+5= 2

7+(-11) = -4

When adding numbers with unlike signs, subtract the larger absolute value from the smaller absolute value, then keep the sign of the number that had the larger absolute value.

-3 + 5
absolute values are 3 and 5: the larger absolute value is 5, which started off positive.

5 - 3 = 2
Keep the answer positive

7 + (-11)
absolute values are 7 and 11: the larger absolute value is 11, which started off negative.

11 - 7 = 4
change the answer to negative
-4

Mistake in my wording (not in my solving).

When adding numbers with unlike signs, subtract the SMALLER absolute value from the LARGER absolute value, then keep the sign of the ORIGINAL number that had the larger absolute value.

To add -3 and 5, you simply need to combine the two numbers.

(-3) + 5 = 2

To add 7 and -11, again you combine the two numbers.

7 + (-11) = -4

Thus, the results are:

-3 + 5 = 2
7 + (-11) = -4
