When people fear that their nation is in danger, they are unified in protecting it and hating the enemy.
War usually brings people together making the same sacrifices -- like the rationing of WWII and the fact that no one could be new cars or household appliances.
War accentuates the differences between "us" and "them" and accentuates the similarities among "us." Although it creates within group unity, it also leads to unwarranted prejudices. Consider the change in perception of the Japanese over a half-century ago and now.
