How did his artwork reflects or defines his time period?
In 1842, through friendly influences, vanderlyn he was commissioned by Congress to paint The Landing of Columbus. When he went to Paris, he hired a French artist, it was said that he did most of the work. Vanderlyn he was the first American to study in France. He was more academic than his fellows; but, though faithfully and capably executed, his work was rather devoid of charm. Vanderlyn he earned a scanty support by portraiture and the single commission by the City of New York. This adds to the portrait of President Zachary Taylor. Vanderlyn had been encouraged by some of the men in the highest political stations in the country to mature a plan for a National Gallery at Washington. When he went to Paris, this is where he painted his picture of “Marius armed the Ruins of Carthage”. He obtained a gold medal there and remains in Paris for seven years.
