Revolutions occur because the people want reform (change). They may want to get rid of a whole type of government (political transformation). They may want to make life better for the ordinary people (social transformation). They may want to get a different ruler.
If the people are unified in the purpose of the revolution, then various subgroups will put away their differences and work together to bring about the desired reforms.
