How much can the average person remember?

It depends on which memory function you are discussing. For short-term memory (STM) (also called working memory), this transitory memory can store about 7 bits of information for a few seconds (about 18) without rehearsal. After that, the memories are gone. However, the bits can be "chunked" into larger meaningful units to temporarily maintain more data.

In contrast, long term memory (LTM) has millions of bits, but it is hard to measure exactly how much.

I hope this helps a little more. Thanks for asking.
