a store charges $28 for a sweater.this price is 40% more than the amount it costs the store.during a sale, store employees can purchase it at 30% off the stores cost. how much will it cost an employee to buy the sweater?

$8.40 is the discount and you subtract this from $28
so, it will cost the employee $19.60.

the 28 represents 140% of the store cost
so the store cost = 28/1.4 = $20

(check: take 40% of 20, then added to 20 gives 28)

now 30% OFF the store cost means the cost would be 70% of the 20 or $14.00

long way: take 30% of 20, then subtract it from 20
