Homework Help: inequalities

i'm dealing with inequalities with one variable and i'm just curious as to why i am doing this? i would like to know the theories behind this.... please help or maybe give me a site?

Often constraints are set in single variables. Your car cannot go faster than 70mph, you cannot type faster than 50wpm, or you cannot weigh less than 60lbs nor more than 560lbs.
