Subtracting a Fraction From 1
Joe Jumped robe for 3 minutes and 24 seconds. How many seconds is three minutes and 24 seconds.
I can figure this out but have no clue how to turn it into a fraction subtraction problem...Can't remember.
Thanks!
3 minutes = 60 seconds x 3 = 180.
180 + 24 = ??
I don't see any subtraction to be done here either.
To represent the time in the problem as a fraction, we need to convert the 3 minutes and 24 seconds into a single unit. Let's start by converting the 3 minutes into seconds.
Since there are 60 seconds in a minute, we can multiply 3 minutes by 60 to get the equivalent in seconds:
3 minutes = 3 × 60 = 180 seconds.
So, we have 180 seconds plus 24 seconds, which gives us a total of 204 seconds.
Now, to represent the time as a fraction, we need to identify the whole unit. In this case, the whole unit is 1, since the problem states "subtracting a fraction from 1."
To calculate the remaining fraction, we subtract the time interval (204 seconds) from the whole unit (1).
1 - (204/60)
To subtract fractions, we need to have a common denominator. In this case, the denominators are already the same (60). So we can subtract the numerators:
1 - (204/60) = (60/60) - (204/60)
Now, we subtract the numerators:
1 - (204/60) = (60 - 204)/60
The numerator simplifies to -144, so the fraction becomes:
-144/60
However, we can further simplify this fraction by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, which is 12:
-144/60 = -12/5
Therefore, the fraction representation of subtracting 3 minutes and 24 seconds from 1 is -12/5.
