Many people have different opinions on the issue of immigration. Does America benefit from Third World Immigration, or is Third World Immigration damaging our nation? Patrick Buchanan argues in “Shields Up!” the growing number of legal and illegal immigrants, especially those from Mexico, is a major threat to our country. This author believes that due to historic tribulations between America and Mexico, immigrants that come from Third World Countries such as Mexico, have very different attitudes than those who immigrate from Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe. Buchanan asserts immigrants from Mexico do not want to fully participate in the American society. They do not want to learn English or become US citizens. Mexicans are not assimilating, but rather becoming their own nation, within our nation. This writer argues that because of this separation in society, America no longer agrees on things such as values, morals, and history. The author states this is the reason America is becoming weak as far as its’ original culture. Buchanan gives statistics that backs his belief that third world immigrants offer no large benefits to our country. Compared to native bourns, illegal immigrants use more governmental assistance programs such as welfare, food stamps, and school lunch programs. Approximately 22 percent immigrants do not have a high school education and many are already a part of our criminal system. Although Buchanan does believe immigration from Mexico is an asset to the business side of America, he believes that mass immigration threatens to destabilize the cultural foundation of our countries unity.

Linda Chavez, author of “The Realities of Immigration”, believes the opposite of Patrick Buchanan. Chavez argues that immigrants do not lower wages or take jobs from American citizens. This author asserts that immigrants are an asset to our culture in which they are hard workers, have a substantial drive and strong family values. She believes the contributions immigrants make to our society outweigh the burdens they impose upon our country, such as the high rate of immigrants receiving government assistance and public services. Chavez emphasizes that immigrants are not free loaders, they pay federal taxes, state and local sales taxes, accounting for a large amount of our Social Security and Medicare taxes. This writer claims that employers favor immigrants over undereducated natives simply due to the increased motivation in the immigrants and their work habits. Immigrants have a strong desire to work. If this country did not have immigrants filling the positions of undesirable work, many employers would move their operations to countries such as Mexico and China. Chavez argues that with the growing economy and more jobs than what we can engross, immigrants are much needed in this country. The author explains that America does not need to just open our borders to immigrants, but to have an orderly plan and policy in which benefits both our needs and the immigrants, such as a guest-worker program. This would allow immigrants to come to America to work under certain requirement and restrictions. Chavez further asserts that although the task of assimilating the large number of immigrants is going to be long and somewhat difficult, it is possible, it will takes time and commitment.
I agree more so with Linda Chavez in that immigration is a benefit to our society. As with just about anything, there is pros and cons to each side of the conflict. Yes, immigrants do cause financial burdens on America, but so does America spending money on fighting wars, for other countries. So which is worse? At least the money immigrants are costing us is being somewhat given back to our own country through the form of federal and wage taxes they pay. Then there is always the fact that immigrants fill positions undesirable to the American citizens. Immigrants, especially from Mexico, are hard workers and do have a drive and determination in them unlike some of our own citizens. For a lot of the immigrants, that is the reason they come to America, is to work and provide. They work hard to take care of their families, usually sending all the money they make back home. I believe that America, if we would be more accepting, could benefit from the difference in cultures amongst us and the immigrants. All cultures have something to offer the other; it’s just hard getting people to be open minded to this idea.
