You do not need the first word "Es"or the word "que" = just Tal vez el desierto (sp) sea un lugar, etc.

P.S. Tal vez means perhaps, so it's like es probable, es posible, etc. = Subjunctive with "maybe." Imagine a crystal ball.
If you can see in it, that it is happening, did happen, will happen, etc. = Indicative.
If it's cloudy and you can NOT see that it is, did, will, etc. = Subjunctive
