Generally in evaluating a piece of literature, first one looks at what the author's primary purpose in writing was.
Then you ask did the author achieve that purpose. How did the author achieve that purpose? Was it the vocabulary, was it the structure of the story, was it the character development?
Was the story worth reading, why or why not? These things are definitely your response to the writing, and will vary from reader to reader.
