Please help me in interpreting this quotation. It comes out of the idea that, FACETIOUS remarks often communicate serious ideas.
Mark Twain: "One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives."

The big clue is the word only.
Twain implied that a lie lives many lives -- that a lie is often passed on and on.
