Homework Help: 6th grade Math

What is the average (mean) distance you walked?
Mon-1 2/3 mi.
Tues- 2 3/4 mi
Wed - 3 1/3 mi.
Thurs. - 1 2/3 mi.
Fri - 2 3/4 mi.

You plan to walk on Saturday. How far must you walk on this day so that your 6 day average is 2 1/2 miles?

average = sum/5

average = (previous sum + x)/6
2.5 = (previous sum + x)/6
15 = previous sum + x
x = 15 - previous sum

sum = 1 8/12 + 2 9/12 + 3 4/12 + 1 8/12 + 2 9/12
sum = 9 + 38/12 = 9 + 3 2/12 = 12 1/6
av = (12 1/6) / 5
av = 2 2/30 = 2 13/30

x = 15 - 12 1/6
x = 14 6/6 - 12 1/6
x = 2 5/6
