why are sig. figs important?

  • chem - ,

It is important, in reporting results or in measuring physical constants, that we not extend the precision of a measurement arbitrarily. For example, if we can measure a quantity of liquid added to a beaker as 2.50 mL, what good does it do to say we added 2.50113445?
