**s**, Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 11:21pmthis is a right triangle

the base is 12ft

hypotenuse is 36ft

x^2 + 12^2 = 36^2

x^2 = 36^2 - 12^2

x^2 = 1152

x = 33.9ft

the pole is 33.9ft + 3ft = 36.9ft
