Don't you hate these as the answer depends on your frame of reference.
I would say that they are looking for slowly as a small crystal takes minutes to a small number of hours to diffuse into the volume of a test tube. If the volume was much larger (a swimming pool)then it might take days. However, both of which are fast on the geological time scale.
