In order of operations do I do 5 1/2 x 11/15 and then add the -7/8?

**drwls**, Friday, October 17, 2008 at 8:53amSince no parentheses are (but should be) shown, I would perform operations from left to right.

(-7/8 + 5 1/2) x (11/15) = 3.3917

This will not give the same answer as

-7/8 + (5 1/2 x 11/15)= -3.529

**Jake**, Monday, October 27, 2008 at 8:58pmAre you trying to say this disproves the Associative property? because the associative property is only if the operation contains all and ONLY addition signs or all and ONLY multiplication signs. Not if it contains both.
