A direct object almost always comes after the main verb in a sentence. It "receives" the action of the verb. Here are some examples, with the direct objects underlined:
John ordered a hamburger.
My mother sketched the beautiful desert scene.
Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. ("pail" is DO for the infinitive "to fetch")
