the x component will be + sqrt (95^240^2) according to Pythagoras

Have you ever heard of Pythagoras and his theorem on right triangles? sqrt means square root.
I am wondering how one does vectors in the Cartesian plane without Pythagoras? Even Rene Descartes used it.
