I recommend checking out the movie The Buddy Holly Story.
He was married when he died in a private plane crash February 1959, but his wife later miscarried. She remarried and had three children, but got divorced and went back to using Holly's last name.
One of his group The Crickets was Waylon Jennings, who later went on to have a great career as his own as a country-western singer. There is a strong rock element to most of his songs.
A Google search with his name will help you find a lot of biographical data.
