In this tragicomedy, Alonso comes from Olmedo, which is hostile to King Juan II but he has his favor. Also, he loves Inés, and being a man of honor, his sword is no match for Rodrigo's bullet. The rivalry between the two men involves both the king's favor and Alonso winning Inés. Lope de Vega actually got the idea for the plot from a legendary ballad about the Knight of Olmedo.
