Homework Help: Simplifying (Math)

[a + (8a^-2)] / [1 + (2a^-1)]

and

[(x^-1) + (y^-1)] /[(x^-1) - (y^-1)]

No idea where to begin simplifying. Suggestions and help are greatly appreciated.
