To find out what follows a linking or action verb, we need to understand the difference between these types of verbs.

A linking verb connects the subject of a sentence to a subject complement, which can be a noun, pronoun, or adjective. Linking verbs do not show action; instead, they express a state of being or condition. Examples of linking verbs include "is," "are," "was," "were," "become," "seem," etc.

An action verb, on the other hand, describes an action or movement performed by the subject of the sentence. These verbs show what someone or something is doing. Examples of action verbs include "run," "eat," "study," "play," "write," etc.

After a linking verb, what follows is a subject complement, which can be a noun, pronoun, or adjective. The subject complement gives more information about the subject and completes the meaning of the verb. Examples:

- She is a doctor. ("Doctor" is a noun and the subject complement that follows the linking verb "is.")
- He seems tired. ("Tired" is an adjective and the subject complement that follows the linking verb "seems.")

To answer the second question, what modifies nouns or pronouns are called modifiers. Modifiers are words, phrases, or clauses that provide additional information about the noun or pronoun they are modifying. They can describe the size, shape, color, quantity, or any other characteristic of the noun or pronoun. Adjectives are the most common type of modifiers that directly describe or modify nouns. Examples:

- The big dog chased the ball. ("Big" is an adjective that modifies the noun "dog.")
- She gave me her old book. ("Old" is an adjective that modifies the noun "book.")

In summary, a subject complement follows a linking verb, while modifiers, especially adjectives, modify nouns or pronouns.
