In my lit class we have to pick a story from our reading list and pick two or three literary devices that the author used and discuss them. Im not sure what is meant by literary devices. Can someone help me out here?

Of course, I'd be happy to help you understand literary devices!

Literary devices are tools or techniques that writers use to enhance their writing and create a specific effect. These devices can be found in various elements of a story, such as plot, characters, setting, dialogue, and language. They are often used to convey meaning, evoke emotions, and add depth and richness to the text.

Here are some commonly used literary devices:

1. Simile: It is a figure of speech that compares two things using "like" or "as." For example, "He runs as fast as a cheetah."

2. Metaphor: Similar to a simile, but without using "like" or "as," it directly states that something is something else. For example, "She is a shining star."

3. Symbolism: It refers to the use of an object, person, place, or action that has both a literal meaning and stands for something beyond its literal meaning. For example, a red rose can symbolize love or romance.

4. Foreshadowing: This technique hints at future events or developments in the story. For instance, if a character repeatedly dreams of a looming storm, it can foreshadow an upcoming conflict.

5. Irony: It occurs when there is a contrast between what is expected and what actually happens. For example, a fire station burning down is an example of situational irony.

6. Personification: It attributes human qualities or characteristics to inanimate objects or animals. For instance, "The wind whispered through the trees."

These are just a few examples of literary devices, and there are many more to explore. When analyzing a story, look for instances where the author has intentionally used these devices to create an impact and deepen the meaning of the text. By identifying and discussing these devices, you can gain a deeper understanding of the author's message and the overall effectiveness of the story.
