My name is Maria X, I am a Cuban American migrated to the United States with

my family in 1970. We came to the United States to flee Cuba's miserable economic and
political conditions. My dad was a welder earning $8 a month and my mom was a
seamstress barely bringing anything home. I was their only child and they wanted to give
me a brighter future than Cuba could ever offer the daughter of a welder.

I want to briefly share an account of my trip from Cuba. We were 9 people in a

rickety boat, when we left Cuba guided solely by a full moon. We spent seven days and

eight nights at sea; we were all dehydrated, and some of us were hallucinating. I was

seeing things in the water and heat. Strong storms churned the water and rain fell hard

into the open boat; we were drifting aimlessly in shark infested waters. My mind was

going, that was the moment I thought we were going to die. We had run out of food,

water and fuel by the time we washed ashore.

Before dawn, on our eight day at sea, the head smuggler of the rickety boat
announced to my father, that we were just off the coast of the Florida Keys and that we
should jump. I clearly remember him saying: Go! Swim! the man said and sped off.
After a half-hour of swimming, with my dad dragging both my mom and I who did not
know how to swim, we reached a remote part of the Keys.
A local woman found us shivering and gave us food and dry clothes. We were

lucky that we did not get caught by the Coast Guard. As far as the five other people that

had embarqued on this journey with us, we never saw them again. "Cubans love the

beach and the sea,” “But after our ordeal, to this day we have had enough of the sea for a

long long time."
(that is the first part)

I'm glad you were able to post this. This is very good so far.

Here's your original assignment.

Describe, as if you were a member of that subordinate group, where the group originated, how it came to the United States, and one or two locations in the United States where members of your group live. Be creative in your fictional descriptions.

My name is Maria X, I am a Cuban American who immigrated to the United States with my family in 1970. We came to the United States to flee Cuba's miserable economic and

You could add HOW you came to the U.S. Did you come by small boat?

You should also include one or two American cities where Cuban-Americans live.

Ms. Sue,

You did not get everything that I had sent to you. Is there another way I could attached it to you. Please let me know

Thank you for sharing your story, Maria X. It sounds like a challenging and harrowing journey. If you have any specific questions or if there's something you'd like to know or discuss, please let me know and I'll do my best to assist you.
