Two things to think about:
1. I've heard people say (and I'm not sure if I agree or not; still thinking on this one) that if the Gulf War had not ended short of deposing (or whatever) Saddam Hussein, then we wouldn't be in this mess now. It's a thinking point, not a truth, since there's no way to predict the future, then or now!
