Later is used as either an adverb or an adjective. Then is almost always used as an adverb.
Remember that adjectives modify nouns and pronouns; they tell which, what kind of, or how many.
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs; they tell when, where, how, and to what extent.
