For MLA, what is the format for the works cited page of a paper? All I know is it has to be in alphabetical order. What should the margins be at? Should it all be dbl-spaced? ... etc.

thanks

The margins should be 1" all around, and you should set a 0.5" hanging indent for the 2nd and succeeding lines of each entry.

The entries need to be in alphabetical order, yes, and NOT numbered.

Double-spaced? Yes.

You can see what a Works Cited page looks like – click on Sample Works Cited in the left column.

To format the Works Cited page of your paper in MLA style, you need to consider several formatting guidelines. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you:

1. Page Setup: Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides. This can be done by adjusting the page layout settings in your word processing software.

2. Heading: Create a heading for your Works Cited page. Center the title "Works Cited" at the top of the page. Make sure it is not in bold, italicized, or underlined.

3. Double Spacing: Double space all entries on the Works Cited page. This includes both within and between entries. To apply double spacing, go to the paragraph settings in your word processing software and select "double" as the line spacing option.

4. Alphabetical Order: Arrange the entries on the Works Cited page in alphabetical order according to the author's last name. If the author's name is not available, sort by the title of the work.

5. Hanging Indentation: Create a hanging indentation for each entry. This means that the first line of each entry is flush with the left margin, while all subsequent lines are indented by 0.5 inches. To achieve this formatting, use the "hanging indent" feature in your word processing software or manually adjust the indentation settings.

6. Author's Name: Provide the author's name as the first element of each entry. The author's name should be listed with the last name first, followed by a comma, and then the author's first name and middle initial (if available).

7. Title of Source: Include the title of the source being cited. It should be capitalized and in title case, meaning all major words in the title are capitalized. Italicize or use quotation marks based on the type of source (e.g., italicize books and websites, use quotation marks for articles and shorter works).

8. Publication Information: Include the publication information for each source. This typically includes the publisher's name, publication date, and page numbers. For online sources, include the URL or doi (if available).

Remember to consult the official MLA Handbook or Purdue OWL for specific guidelines or any updates to the formatting standards.
