Do I use a colon or a period at the end of the following sentence?

According to the author of this article, the hypothesis is as follows

grammar - Writeacher, Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 7:34am
You'd use a colon. Then, if the following is a complete sentence, start it with a capital letter.
