**Dr Russ**, Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 10:50am4x-2y=-5

-x+2y=2

Adding the two equations together gives

4x-2y+-x+2y=-5+2

the ys on the LHS cancel to give

4x-x=-3

3x=-3

x=-1

substitute x=-1 into one of the starting equations.

4(-1)-2y=-5

-4-2y=-5

-2y=-1

y=1/2

Have a go at the others.
