I don't think the question is exactly clear. The TOTAL resistance is obviously 12 + 4= 16 ohms; however, the resistance in the circuit is 3.0 ohms and your answer is correct. I think we can assume the person who wrote the question meant the total resistance in the circuit (in which they are parallel).
