How do you think slavery influenced the evolution of both Black and White America today?
I think that our country owes a lot to the blacks that were brought here through bondage and to those who were free. They help this country to become what it is. They built this country. The whites that were slave owners needed people to do their work for them but made the blacks do it. They felt superior then and some whites still do to this day. Our country do not have slaves any more but we are still living with people that has that slave mentality. Some people still think that blacks are beneath them. If that was not the case, why do we still have these racist groups in our country? The group may not be as visible as the were back then but they are around. The Ku Klux Klan are in business suits and judges wearing black robes instead of white ones. We are still divided unfortunately in this country. Slavery has left pain, anger and frustration in many peoples hearts and I believe it will be many more years before it is gone. Some whites today feel that blacks use slavery as an excuse for many things and that blacks now have too many advantages. We do not have any advantages in my opinion. We still have to prove that we are smart educated individuals and that we deserve to be treated as equals not less than any other person. Many positive things have come about but we still have a long way to go before we are in harmony with race issues.
Consider racial imbalances in education, the economy, family life, housing, criminal justice, health care, and politics. Of these societal challenges facing modern African Americans, which do you think are most difficult to overcome, and why?
