Determine the actual yield in grams of CCL4 if 175.0g of Cl2 reacts with meathane. The percentage yield of the reaction is 75.4%

1. Write the equation and balance it.

2. Convert 175.0 g Cl2 to mols. # mols = grams/molar mass.
3. Using the coefficients in the balanced equation, convert mols Cl2 to mols CCl4. This is the theoretical yield.
4. Multiply theoretical yield in step 3 by 0.754 to convert to actual yield.
Post your work if you get stuck.

thanks DrBob222. i really needed that. So are you saying to get the actual yield you take what is given covert use molar ratio and take the percent and divide by 100?? i have a test tomorrow kind of important...

Actually you don't take the percent and divide by 100. You take the theoretical amount and multiply by (percent/100). That may be what you said. I jus wanted to clarify. Sorry I was so long in gtting back but I had to leave the house for about 5 hours.

o that's ok i got a 98 on my test. thanks. I just missed one but it wasn't that.

Thanks so much for posting this. I have a test tomorrow as well and I was stuck on a lot of the problems til I found this.

To determine the actual yield of CCl4, we first need to calculate the theoretical yield using stoichiometry.

The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between Cl2 and methane (CH4) is:

CH4 + Cl2 -> CCl4 + H2

From the equation, we see that 1 mole of Cl2 reacts with 1 mole of CH4 to produce 1 mole of CCl4.

Step 1: Calculate the moles of Cl2 reacted
To find the moles of Cl2, we need to use its molar mass. The molar mass of Cl2 is 70.906 g/mol.

Moles of Cl2 = Mass of Cl2 / Molar mass of Cl2
= 175.0 g / 70.906 g/mol
= 2.465 mol

Step 2: Calculate the moles of CCl4 using the stoichiometry of the reaction
From the balanced equation, we know that the molar ratio between Cl2 and CCl4 is 1:1.

Therefore, Moles of CCl4 = Moles of Cl2
= 2.465 mol

Step 3: Calculate the theoretical yield
The theoretical yield is the amount of CCl4 that would be produced if the reaction went to completion.

To find the theoretical yield, we need to use the molar mass of CCl4, which is 153.82 g/mol.

Theoretical Yield of CCl4 = Moles of CCl4 * Molar mass of CCl4
= 2.465 mol * 153.82 g/mol
= 378.97 g

Step 4: Calculate the actual yield
The actual yield is given as a percentage of the theoretical yield. In this case, it is 75.4%.

Actual Yield of CCl4 = Percentage Yield * Theoretical Yield
= 0.754 * 378.97 g
= 286.19 g

Therefore, the actual yield of CCl4 is 286.19 grams.
