Change the numbers to all fractions.
8 1/9 = 73/9
(That is 9x8 = 72 and that +1 = 73).
1 6/7 = 13/7.
Now find the common denominator of 9 and 7 which is 63 (I don't think there is a smaller number) and convert each of those numbers above into 63rds.
73/9 = 511/63
(63/9 = 7 and that x 73 = 511).
13/7 = 117/63.
Now you can subtract the numerators by 511-112 = 394/63. I don't think this number can be reduced.
