Okay, i have a slightly dumb question to ask,

When you tune a guitar, do you have to hold the string at the neck when you play it, or do you just play it "free"? Do you know what i mean?

Generally speaking one needs to have one hand on the frets and one hand to strum or pick.

no freakin idea

that is a stupid question. you don't even tune a guitar. and what are these "strings" you speak of? you are stupid. go back to kindergarten music class.

Not a dumb question at all! When tuning a guitar, you don't need to hold the strings at the neck. In fact, to accurately tune the guitar, it's usually better to have the strings free and not pressing down on any of the frets.

Here's how you can tune a guitar without holding the strings at the neck:

1. Start by ensuring that your guitar is in its usual playing position with the neck facing upward.

2. If you have a guitar tuner, it's really helpful. Attach the tuner to the headstock or use a tuner app on your smartphone. This will provide visual feedback on whether the string is in tune.

3. Begin by plucking the lowest string (the thickest one), which is typically tuned to E. Look at the tuner or app and observe the pitch it detects.

4. If the tuner indicates that the pitch is too high or too low, adjust the tuning peg located at the headstock. Turning it clockwise raises the pitch, while turning it counterclockwise lowers the pitch.

5. Continue plucking the string and adjusting the tuning peg until the tuner shows that the string is in tune. Usually, the tuner will display a green indicator or "in tune" message.

6. Repeat this process for each of the remaining strings. The next string is typically tuned to A, followed by D, G, B, and finally the highest-pitched string, E.

Remember to tune the strings one by one, making sure each string is in tune before moving on to the next. And try not to put any pressure on the strings at the neck while tuning, as this can affect the accuracy.

Once you've tuned all the strings, your guitar should be ready to play!
