The most important thing is that we can criticize our government without being punished. You can give speeches and write published articles complaining about the government.
Many positive changes have been made because we have freedom of speech. Candidates for public office and their supporters point out the faults they see in other candidates and the present leaders. The voters get to hear both sides of every story.
Newspapers, TV commentators, internet blogs also keep the public informed about the government.
African-Americans were able to gain their civil rights because they and their leaders, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., were able to speak freely without fear of being punished by local leaders.
