Please explain how to do this problem:

5 + 3 x 2 + (4+2)=

I did 5+3=8 x2+ 16 +6=22
did I do this correctly?
Thank you...

i got 17

no.

You may NOT add 5 and 3x^2.

5 + 3 x 2 + (4+2)=

I assume you mean for this to be
5 + 3x^2 + (4+2) = and I'll go from there.
3x^2 + 11 =
3x^2 = -11
x^2 = -11/3
x = sqrt (-11/3)

5 + 3 x 2 + (4+2)

5 + 3*2 + 6 Do in parentheses first

5 + 6 + 6 multiply or divide

now add
I also get 17

BUT perhaps you left a parenthesis out?
IF you really had
(5+3)*2 + (4+2)
THEN
(8)*2 + 6
=16 +6
=22

5+3=8 right?

now you solved what 5+3 equaled.

Now your problem reads 8x2+(4+2)

Next you solve what 8x2 equales and what 4+2 equales.

and when you add those two answers together what do you get?

I assume she used x for times and not a variable name based on her earlier postings, but I could easily be wrong.

Really for that reason it is a good idea to use * for "multiply" Ashley

you all are right, I was still confused but look above, I think I have it now...

Thanks for your help everyone!!!

YOU'RE WELCOME!

To correctly solve this problem, you need to follow the order of operations, which is commonly remembered using the acronym PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction).

Let's break down the problem using this order:

Step 1: Solve the expression inside the parentheses: (4+2)
4 + 2 = 6

Step 2: Perform multiplication: 3 x 2
3 x 2 = 6

Now, let's rewrite the problem without the parentheses and the multiplication, applying the results of the previous steps:

5 + 6 + 6

Step 3: Complete the addition: 5 + 6 + 6
5 + 6 = 11
11 + 6 = 17

So, the correct answer to the problem 5 + 3 x 2 + (4+2) is 17.

From your solution, it seems that you made a mistake by adding 3 and 5 instead of performing the multiplication first. Therefore, your previous calculation of 5 + 3 = 8 is incorrect. Additionally, you have an error with the multiplication step, as 8 x 2 should equal 16, not 22.

Therefore, the correct calculation is: 5 + 3 x 2 + (4+2) = 17.

I hope this explanation helps you understand how to solve this problem correctly!
