Abbot Bernard of Clairvaux and the Cistercian Order. The Cistercians essentially believed that a monastery should be devoid of artworks and have bare walls. In 1125, in a letter addressed to William, Abbot of St.-Thierry entitled the Apologia, Bernard specifically criticized the use of art in monasteries. The following text is taken from a translation of the Apologia by Conrad Rudolph in Things of Greater Importance: Bernard of Clairvaux's Apologia and the Medieval Attitude toward Art.
