This is an excellent reading list. It says for "college bound" students, but really, it's an excellent list for everyone.
For an 8th-9th grader, I'd stay within the American Lit section. If a title and short description seems appealing, then go to Wikipedia or Google to find out more about it -- or you could pick a title randomly and just dive in!
