Homework Help: sentence revision

As I was looking at the map on the screen and realized my destination of my new home was REACHING closer, the flight attendant’s announcement CAME on, “Ladies and gentlemen, we ask that you remain seated and fasten your seatbelt. We will be landing shortly at the San Francisco Airport.”

would i say reaching closer or coming closer. also, instead of saying came on, what would be another way to say it.
