Homework Help: precal

I do not understand when a function is even or not. I know the formula for telling them apart, but I do not understand it. Could someone break down the formula for me and explain it?

It is rather easy:

If f(x)=f(-x) it is even.
If f(x)=-f(-x) it is odd.
