Homework Help: Early Child Ed--Please Help!

Posted by Tamera on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 2:32pm.

I have already asked someone to check these questions and my answers to make sure the most appropriate choice was chosen. Would you please recheck these
and let me know what I have wrong?

1. Family-focused early education of
exceptional children encourages:

A. families to be partners in
decision making.

B. families to make all the decisions
about their child's education.

C. children to be educated at home.

D. parents to be their child's teacher.

2. Anecdotal records are often used
to gather information on a child's
development because:

A. writing down everything a child says
or does is important.

B. they tell you how long a behavior
lasts.

C. they explain the reasons for a
child's behavior.

D. brief notes are easier and quicker
to write.

3. If a special educator asks you to
do a frequency count on a child's
placement of toys in his mouth,
she wants you to:

A. guess if it is happening less
often.

B. record when it happens.

C. write down exactly when it happens.

D. remember how often it happens.

4. Which of the following is NOT an
example of acitvity-based instruction
for an exceptional child in school?

A. A physical therapist having a child
practice walking in his walker in
the hallway during free time play.

B. A special education teacher
sitting with a child in circle
time encouraging him to listen
to a story.

C. A speech therapist teaching a child
and some other children a new song
during music time.

D. An occupational therapist sitting
at the luch table with a child at
school.

5. Which of the following is NOT
a good way to communicate with
parents of young children about
their child's development?

A. Telephone calls at home.
B. Informal notes sent home.
C. A home-school journal.
D. Report cards with letter grades.

Here are my answers. Please let me know
the ones I have wrong.

#1. (A) families to be partners in
decision-making

#2. (D) brief notes are easier and
quicker to write.

#3. (C) write down exactly when it
happens.

#4. (D) An occupational therapist
sitting at the lunch table
with a child at school.

#5. (D) Report cards with letter
grades.

I am a little confused on question 3,
because I know a frequency count is
how often something happens. But you wouldn't ask someone to (D)remember how
often it happens, would you?
Wouldn't it be better to (C) write down exacly when it happens?

Thank you for your help!

I agree. C would be the best answer for that. You want to know why an action occurs.

Your answers seem right, except for #3. For frequency, the number of times is the important variable, not when, so D is the best alternative.

Also, I am not quite sure of #2. Depending on the type of anecdotal records done, if they describie the circumstances under which specific behaviors occurred, they might help to explain why the behavior occurred. In this case, I would favor C.

I hope this helps. Thanks for asking.

So- on question 3, one person says
(D) and another person says (C)

please reread the 3rd question again-

you wouldn't ask someone to :
remember when it happens would you?

Wouldn't the most appropriate answer be
(c) Write down exactly when it happens?

I am very confused on question 3-
how can you ask another person to
remember how often it happens?

A frequency count has this result: The kid put the XXXX in her mouth on the average of twice each half hour today.

Now, if you can remember how often, great, that is all you need to do, is watch and remember. I would have to keep track of when, because likely I would forget in a classroom when the last time was. I had to do frequency counts on bathroom visits once, I had to keep a chart. Too many kids, too many visits to remember.
D is probably the best answer, but for most of us, we would have to chart it to give the report. CAn you remember how many times you have been to the bathroom today? Or stuck something in your mouth?
The question is designed to confuse, in my opinion. How many confusing questions have I had today? I dont remember, I didn't write them down.

And, to help you clear it up, you dont need records of exactly when it happened. I would go with answer D, knowing full well in my own mind, I would keep a log record as a memory assist. Sometimes things get pretty hectic in a classroom, as in life.
