Homework Help: sociolinguistics

Posted by tea on Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 3:56pm.

does anyone know what a superposed language is?

To superpose is to place something OVER something else. In this case, if you are talking about a language, you would be taking a new language and making it the language of common usage. Example, if you are an immigrant into the US, then English would be a superposed language. In India, English was superposed over the native languages spoken there. In Mexico, when the Spanish occupied the country, then Spanish became superposed over Mayan and Aztec and the other native languages. I hope this helps.

thank you:)
