"One of the ironies of World War I was that in a war 'to make the world safe for democracy,' the government attacked the civil liberties that make democracy possible."

I don't know what you're supposed to do with that (quotation?), but the search results below have lots of interesting information in them:

what caused World War I?

World War I was caused by a complex combination of factors, including militarism, imperialism, and alliances. The immediate trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist in June 1914. This event escalated into a larger conflict as various countries honored their alliances and declared war on each other. Austria-Hungary's ultimatum to Serbia following the assassination and Serbia's rejection of some of its terms also played a significant role in sparking the conflict. Additionally, long-standing tensions and rivalries between European powers, as well as competition for colonial territories, contributed to the outbreak of the war.
