Can anyone help please,

Can anyone help me to calculate the increase in biomass in each of the three groups,

Field mice Ingested 107Kj m-2 y-1 and lost 105 kj m-2 y-1 in respiration & faeces

Grasshoppers ingested 444 kj and lost 374.3 kj

and small birds ate seeds 60 kj and lost 59.2 kj

Is there an equation for this or is it some sum involving the Gpp or NPP for the ecosytem concerned ????

I suspect it is the ingested amount - amoutn lost in respiration
Thank you...all the best for 2007 !!!

I think you are correct.

Well thank you !!!

Happy new year !

Thats very naughty getting anwsers for your OU coursework!

Zoe,

and what are you doing here ?????

OU Coursework perhaps LOL !!!

To calculate the increase in biomass for each group, you can use the equation:

Increase in Biomass = Ingested Energy - Energy Lost

For the field mice group, the ingested energy is 107 Kj m-2 y-1 and the energy lost is 105 Kj m-2 y-1. Therefore, the increase in biomass for field mice would be:

Increase in Biomass = 107 - 105 = 2 Kj m-2 y-1

For the grasshopper group, the ingested energy is 444 Kj and the energy lost is 374.3 Kj. Therefore, the increase in biomass for grasshoppers would be:

Increase in Biomass = 444 - 374.3 = 69.7 Kj

For the small bird group, the ingested energy is 60 Kj and the energy lost is 59.2 Kj. Therefore, the increase in biomass for small birds would be:

Increase in Biomass = 60 - 59.2 = 0.8 Kj

So, the increase in biomass for each group would be 2 Kj m-2 y-1 for field mice, 69.7 Kj for grasshoppers, and 0.8 Kj for small birds.
